Self-Care
Teacher training can be intense, stressful, rewarding and tiring (but worth it!). It is important when you begin your first role to ensure you look after yourself mentally and physically. Things to help could include talking to friends, reading, walking, exercising and other things you love. One of our top NQT tips is don’t let your job consume your life, it will only lead to you burning out and not being able to give your best to your pupils.
Warm up sessions
Following a long lay-off from any sort of education or hard work, motivating pupils can prove to be a very difficult task. A fantastic way to get students back in a driven and motivated mind-set could be the introduction or morning ‘Warm up’ sessions! Starters are a fun way for you to get to know your pupils and understand where they at academically.
Organisation
Start as you mean to go on by sticking to your routine but particularly the mastery of your classroom. Write to do lists every day and create weekly or termly goals that you want to achieve – this is some of our top NQT advice! Effectively setting up your classroom is essential!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
Make good use of your mentor and colleagues around you. Strong NQTs are well known for asking for advice and reflecting upon this. It is your mentor’s job to support you. One of our most important NQT tips would be to observe other colleagues and be enthusiastic to continue learning.
We all make mistakes!
Don’t be too hard on yourself. When you receive praise, think of how far you have come and how hard you have worked for it. We all make mistakes and your first year of teaching is no exception to this. Just remember every lesson is a learning experience for you too, self-reflection is key!
